LLC Resonant Converter: The Core Solution for High-Efficiency Power Design

In the field of high-efficiency, high-power-density power design, the LLC resonant converter has become the preferred solution for numerous applications due to its exceptional performance.


In today's power management landscape, as requirements for energy efficiency, power density, and electromagnetic compatibility continue to increase, traditional switching power supply topologies struggle to meet the demands of high-performance applications. The LLC resonant converter, as a soft-switching technology, achieves zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and zero-current switching (ZCS) across the entire load range through its unique resonant operation mechanism, significantly reducing switching losses and emerging as a core technology in modern power design.


01 What is an LLC Resonant Converter?


The LLC resonant converter derives its name from the unique network in its resonant tank, which consists of two inductors (L) and one capacitor (C). This structure typically includes a series resonant inductor (Lr), a parallel magnetizing inductor (Lm), and a resonant capacitor (Cr).

This topology enables soft-switching operation of power switching devices through the principle of resonance, substantially reducing switching losses and improving system efficiency.

Compared to traditional PWM converters, the LLC resonant converter employs pulse frequency modulation (PFM), adjusting the switching frequency to regulate the output voltage instead of using conventional duty cycle control.

The LLC resonant converter demonstrates excellent performance across multiple dimensions:

Soft-Switching Characteristics: The LLC converter can achieve zero-voltage switching (ZVS) for primary-side switches and zero-current switching (ZCS) for secondary-side rectifiers across a wide load range. This characteristic eliminates the voltage-current overlap during switching transitions, greatly reducing switching losses.

High Efficiency: The soft-switching特性 makes the LLC converter particularly suitable for high-frequency operation, reducing heat dissipation requirements and increasing power density. Measured data show that optimized LLC converter designs can achieve peak efficiencies of 97.1%.

Low Electromagnetic Interference (EMI): Resonant operation enables switches to turn on under zero-voltage conditions, significantly reducing the rates of change of voltage and current (dV/dt and dI/dt), thereby minimizing high-frequency noise generation.

Wide Input Voltage Range: Through frequency regulation, the LLC converter can maintain stable output across a wide input voltage range, a feature particularly valuable in applications with significant input voltage fluctuations.


03 Diverse Topology Structures


Depending on application requirements, LLC resonant converters can be implemented using various topologies:

Half-Bridge LLC: Simple structure, lower cost, suitable for applications below 1kW. Its equivalent AC square wave voltage amplitude is half of the input voltage.

Full-Bridge LLC: Suitable for high-power applications (typically above 1kW). While requiring more switching devices, it provides higher power handling capability.

Multilevel LLC: An improved structure that has emerged in recent years, constructing multilevel structures higher than the input voltage by adding half-bridges and auxiliary transformers, expanding the voltage gain range.


04 Broad Application Fields


Due to its excellent performance characteristics, the LLC resonant converter has found widespread applications across multiple fields:

Electric Vehicle Power Systems: In the later DC-DC stage of onboard chargers, LLC converters provide wide output range capability, meeting the 250-420V charging voltage requirements of power batteries.

Communication and Server Power Supplies: High efficiency and high power density characteristics make LLC the ideal choice for server and communication equipment power supplies, with market penetration rapidly increasing.

Industrial and Lighting Power Supplies: In industrial power supplies and LED driving applications, the efficient, compact solutions provided by LLC converters are gradually replacing traditional topologies.

Consumer Electronics: Consumer electronic products like LCD televisions widely adopt LLC topology as the main power stage.


05 Market Scale and Prospects


According to market research statistics, the global LLC resonant converter market size was approximately ¥1.1 billion in 2024, projected to grow to ¥1.89 billion by 2031, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.8% during this period.

This growth is primarily driven by the rapid expansion of downstream markets such as electric vehicles, servers, and communication equipment. Meanwhile, China's share in the global market is gradually increasing, showing strong development potential.

In terms of technological innovation, new control strategies like fixed-frequency phase-shift control are addressing the limitations that traditional variable-frequency control places on resonant parameter design, simplifying the parameter design process.

The development of non-isolated LLC resonant converters also provides better options for non-isolated application scenarios like photovoltaic inverters.


As global requirements for energy efficiency continue to increase, LLC resonant converter technology continues to evolve. New control strategies, topology optimizations, and material innovations are further pushing its performance boundaries.

In the future, LLC resonant converters will play an even more important role in key fields such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and data centers, providing fundamental technical support for global energy efficiency.

For power designers, mastering the core technology of LLC resonant converters means gaining critical performance advantages in competitive markets.
